Gain Academic and Social Skills Through Our Services

TEACHERS AND ADMINISTRATORS

The TIEL Institute provides professional development workshops and coaching for teachers and administrators in K-12 urban, suburban, public, private, and parochial schools. Participants learn to use the TIEL Curriculum Design model to create student-managed project learning, help students develop executive functioning skills, and support students’ social-emotional learning. TIEL helps both the newest teachers and experienced master teachers learn valuable new skills.

Workshop topics can include, but are not limited to:

  • Designing student-managed project-based curriculum that teaches self-organization, decision-making, planning, collaboration, and self-evaluation
  • Using TIEL components to plan units and lessons that increase engagement, deepen student learning, and develop metacognitive skills
  • Questioning that purposefully helps students develop thinking skills and social-emotional characteristics
  • Balancing curricular goals between learning content and skills and teaching the underlying process of thinking and social-emotional learning
  • Validating and motivating colleagues

How will professional development services look in my school?

Professional development services are tailored to fit the needs of the faculty, scheduling, and budget of your school.

Consultation
An initial consultation with your school’s leadership team will determine the workshop topics, scheduling of workshops, follow-up sessions, and the budget.

Workshops
Workshops can be in-person or online held on days set aside for professional development before or during the school year. Workshops include time for teachers to plan how to apply the strategies with their students.

Follow-up Coaching
The most effective learning is achieved when workshops are followed by in-classroom or online coaching. Coaching includes classroom visits and focused conversations with individual teachers or grade levels.

INSTRUCTIONAL COACHES and TEACHER EDUCATORS

The TIEL Institute offers professional development workshops that support instructional coaches and teacher educators. TIEL aids classroom teachers in planning curriculum and instruction that purposefully includes the teaching of thinking and social-emotional learning. The TIEL model helps instructional coaches and teacher educators observe classrooms more deeply and clearly communicate feedback to teachers.

Workshops prepare instructional coaches and teacher educators to help teachers:

  • Plan lessons and project-based units of study that include the teaching of thinking and social-emotional learning
  • Create lessons and units that balance thinking and social-emotional learning; convergent and divergent thinking
  • Reflect effectively on their teaching
  • Be comfortable with rigorous teacher appraisals
  • Receive and implement feedback
  • Feel validated and supported in the classroom
  • Validate and champion their most challenging students
  • Challenge their most advanced students

PARENTS

As parents, we have little preparation for the important role of supporting our children in their education. The TIEL Institute offers workshops that prepare parents with a knowledge of schools, teaching, and learning that can help them connect more effectively with their child’s education. When parents understand the learning needs of their children and how schools work, they can advocate more effectively for the education they need.

A TIEL Workshop helps parents to:

  • Understand the intellectual and emotional aspects of learning
  • Talk about your child’s educational needs with teachers
  • Discuss concerns with administrators and specialists
  • Ask questions of teachers and administrators that focus on learning and teaching
  • Respond to teacher comments and suggestions
  • Set criteria that will assist you in choosing a school for your child
