The TIEL model, graphically represented by the TIEL Design Wheel, was developed by Dr. Christy Folsom. The TIEL model is founded on her experiences in teaching thinking skills through project-based curriculum in Social Studies, Science and Literacy to gifted students, general education students, and through professional development, to teachers and administrators.
The TIEL model was further developed as part of Dr. Folsom’s doctoral work at Teachers College, Columbia University. Her dissertation research, entitled Helping Teachers Facilitate Decision Making, Planning, and Self-Evaluation with Students, involved teaching four New York City public school teachers in second through fifth grades how to integrate the teaching of self-management skills--decision making, planning, and self-evaluation--into Social Studies project work.
